In 2016 and in 2022, I had the opportunity to illustrate the structure of the nuclear pore complex for Science.

Combining PDB and cryo-em data provided by the labs of André Hoelz and Martin Beck, I created these illustrations in Cinema4D to showcase the incredible NPC structure. The two covers, 6 years apart, mirror each other and reflect the advances made during that time period. Much of the cryo-em density has now been filled in. This can perhaps best be appreciated by the top view from the cytoplasmic side, as illustrated for the intro to the special section.
